The Statue of Unity is 182 metres tall and stands on an island in the Narmada, about 150 km north of Surat. From Adajan, the drive is just under three hours via the NH-48 and the new Kevadia approach road. That's why it works so well as a day trip — leave Surat at 6 AM, you're back home in bed the same night.
Best time to leave Surat. Early — between 5:30 and 6:30 AM. The statue opens at 8 AM, and you want to be in the queue by 9 to avoid the late-morning crowd. We've done this run hundreds of times; the difference between a 6 AM start and an 8 AM start is roughly two hours of queue time.
What to pre-book. The Viewing Gallery ticket (the lift up to the statue's chest) sells out by mid-morning on weekends. Book online the night before via the official soutickets site. Also pre-book the Valley of Flowers entry if you want a green stop after the statue.
The route inside Kevadia. It's bigger than it looks. There's the statue itself, then the Sardar Sarovar Dam, the Jungle Safari, the Cactus Garden and Children's Nutrition Park, plus boating on the Narmada. A single day comfortably covers the statue, the dam and either the safari or the gardens — not all three.
Food. Skip the canteens inside. There are decent Gujarati thalis on the highway just before Karjan; we recommend stopping for an early lunch on the way back rather than eating on-site.
Best vehicle for the trip. A Swift Dzire works for two people. For a family of four with parents, an Ertiga is the sweet spot — boot space for the day-trip bags, comfortable for the highway, fuel-efficient. Six or more, take the Innova.
When you book this trip with us, we handle the highway tolls, the parking, and the wait time at the statue — you just need to walk in and see it.
