Saputara sits in the Dang district of Gujarat, at about 900 metres above sea level. From Surat it's a four-hour drive — easy enough for a Friday-evening departure and a Sunday-evening return. But the hill behaves very differently depending on the month.
June to September (monsoon). This is when Saputara is most itself. The Sahyadris turn green, waterfalls along the route — Gira Falls and Hatgad — run hard, and the temperature stays in the low 20s even at noon. The trade-off is wet roads, low cloud and the occasional landslide warning. Book a stay with a balcony; the rain is half the point.
October to February (winter). The clearest views of the year, and easily the busiest. Mornings start at 8°C and warm to about 22°C by afternoon. Sunsets at Sunset Point are spectacular in late November. Diwali week and Christmas week are essentially fully booked at every resort — plan three weeks ahead or pick a midweek.
March to May (summer). Saputara is at its quietest. Daytime touches 28°C but evenings stay cool. Tribal museum, ropeway and lake boating are uncrowded. If you want photos without people in them, this is the season.
The drive. Take NH-48 toward Vapi, exit at Waghai and climb the ghat road. It's a good road but with several blind hairpins — not a stretch to attempt at night for the first time. We always start outbound trips so we hit the ghat in daylight.
A Swift Dzire is fine for two people if you're packing light. For a family of four with luggage for two nights, the Ertiga handles the ghat road much better.
